Rapist jailed for 10 years
A BURNLEY man convicted of a string of sex offences including rape has been sent to prison for 10 years.
A judge directed that Tariq Mahmood should be on five years' extended licence when he is eventually released and be on the Sex Offenders' Regsiter for life.
The 35-year-old, of Stafford Street, Burnley, had been convicted by a jury following trial at Burnley Crown Court. He was found guilty of two charges of rape, plus three of indecent assault.
At Preston Crown Court, Judge Christopher Cornwall considered statements made by the two victims in the case and told the defendant: "The harm you have done to them is very considerable."
Defence barrister Mr John Maxwell said the family of Mahmood, who is now married, were at court. A man of previous good character, he was originally from Pakistan.
The judge said testimonials presented on his behalf showed a very different aspect to his character.
